If you have seen some of the night sky pictures such as:
and you might have some questions. First off these pictures are very real, in other words Photoshop did not create these pictures. There are two ways to do this, one is just one long exposure and the second is taking a bunch of exposures stacked together. I'll show you the single frame long exposeure first. The picture above is one long exposure, 40 minutes to be exact. Now what you will need is a camera that has a bulb function a dslr is the best type of camera for this type of stuff but if your camera has a bulb option then it will work. You will need a tripod and a clear view of the night sky preferably away from the big city. You will also need a lens that has a wide angel (35mm or less). And a wireless remote (might be optional). Now to check to see if your camera has a bulb option: First you will want to do is go to manual or shutter priority, then set the shutter speed to as long as it will go. At the very end past all of the settable speeds and you should see a bulb option. As seen here
As you can see I set the shutter speed past all the second options to get to the blub option. Now it your camera will only go to 30, 20 ,15 seconds maximum have no fear it will still be possible to do but you will need to used stacked images. Now test the shutter by pressing the shutter button, if it takes a picture then you might have to buy a wireless remote but they are very cheap. If it opens when you click it and stays open until you press it again and it closes then you are all set. If you need a wireless remote the best thing to do is go to you local camera store (something better that wallmart). I like to go to Inkleys but if they don't have a camera store where you live then you can order them online. Search for wireless remote for (your camera type). Now you will want to put it to the widest angle set the aperture to as large(small number) as it can go and set the ISO at about 200ish. Once you have all that done you are set for picture!
Now its time to set it up! Put your camera on your tripod and aim it at the sky and open the shutter. You can open it as long as you want but anything over 30 seconds will work just fine.
If you try this and don't get what you want don't stop just keep trying. If you have any questions or comments please leave them in the comment box below, or shoot me an E-mail at [email protected] thanks!
